Baz Luhrmann told the class of '99 to wear sunscreen. I disagree, you need to be stretching.
My skincare specialist wife might fight me on this 😬 And absolutely, you should wear sunscreen - but nobody warned me about this ..
I hit 40 a couple of years ago, and mentally, I felt pretty ready. A few people had said that it can be a little rough, that they struggled with reaching the 'big 4-0', but if I'm being honest, I was kind of excited about it.
Your 40s are supposed to be that sweet spot. You've figured out how to 'do' parts of life .. You have an actual budget .. And, unlike athletes whose bodies tend to peak before their experience and mental aptitude can catch up - this is when creatives come into their own, and truly flourish.
Experience + capability .. Except my body didn't get the memo 😣
I ache constantly. Spending most of my time hunched over screens .. Standing desks help - and then they don't .. You're supposed to take breaks every 20 minutes, but deadlines really don't care about 'ergonomic best practices'. Last month one cough had me pulling something in my back, that led to two weeks of me moving around like I'm 70.
So now I stretch. Ten minutes, three times a day - and I still ache .. But I can function, and I hobble way less.
.. I know - this isn't 'sexy' advice .. It won't make you a better creative. But it will [hopefully] keep you creating. Yes, the work matters - but having a body that can do the work matters way more - because all the taste and experience in the world won't save you, if you can't actually sit at your desk in some kind of comfort.
School .. College .. Uni .. Maybe I'd have listened, maybe I wouldn't, but at some point in the early stages of my career, I feel like someone should've shared this with me as their parting gift - so anyone on the look out for advice ..
Trust me on the stretching.
