Around 12 years ago, I realised my reading list was almost entirely male authors. I decided this needed to change, so I set the intention .. For one year, I'm only reading books by women - which almost immediately expanded to intentionally seeking out books by women of Colour.
This quickly snowballed - relatively speaking, I'm a slow reader 🙄 .. My reading list exploded, and I discovered a whole array of incredible storytellers that excited me way more than I'd ever previously been excited about reading.
.. Lately, I've been reflecting on this within the context of my career, and I've noticed a similar pattern. While I've had the privilege of collaborating with many brilliant women - the final decision-makers, agency owners, heads of production companies, etc. have been predominantly men.
When I wanted to diversify my reading, I knew where to look .. But finding, and connecting with female-led and diversely-owned businesses feels a little less straightforward.
So I'm setting a new intention .. To Actively seek out and support agencies, production companies, studios - led by women, and people from diverse backgrounds. Switching up my reading habits immeasurably enriched my love of books, and I'm in search of something similar in the world of work.
It feels like an obvious parallel - expanding your circle can lead to growth and possibilities that were right there, just waiting to be seen.
